The Phase Story: Never-seen Phase Prototypes

In January 2018, Phase took the world of DJing by storm during its reveal at the NAMM Show.

The craziest part?

It was just a prototype created a few months earlier!

In this first article of "The Phase Story," we’re taking you back to the beginning.

Discover exclusive sketches of the early Phase prototypes that shaped its history.

The working concept

The concept of Phase was exciting, but was it technically feasible?
We had to find out quickly.

So, in just a few days, we built the very first prototype.
It wasn’t the sleek Phase you know today, just a stack of electronic cards.

But guess what? It worked!

See below the very first original Phase prototype in action:

OF COURSE we had to try some air scratching 😉

Designing the product

Once convinced by the concept, it was time to find a suitable design.

But it wasn’t that easy with all the constraints ahead: robustness, practicality, technical constraints...let the games of perfect design begin!

Initially, we envisioned round shapes to mimic the center of a vinyl record.

But... we quickly scrapped the idea.

The design was impractical and hard to scale down with the necessary technology inside.

Then we moved on to the needle shape idea.

Since Phase is kind of a “digital needle” it only makes sense to design as one, right?

Hundreds of concepts of needle-shaped Phase were explored.

And yet, even though the concept seemed close to our vision…

There were still a lot of technical constraints. And the practical, universal aspect we were looking for was still missing.

The same goes for the concept of the Receiver, which posed another big challenge.

We needed a smart way to charge the Remotes while keeping them completely protected.

Finally, the ideal shape emerged: simple, elegant, and meeting all our technical requirements.

The team was sure of it—this was the one!

Not perfect, but close design ideas of Phase

Knowing that we were on the right path, it was time to start working on the technical 3D designs!

The technical part

The main objective of this step was to integrate technical constraints into the chosen design. Will it work?

This was also an important step in experimenting with materials and colors!

The final product

After months of research, the final design was validated.

The design that we know and love today!

Of course, this article only covers a brief part of the story, and there's so much more to the incredible Phase adventure.
