Can you introduce yourself and your DJ background?

My name is ESKEI83, I'm a DJ and producer from Germany. Many people know me from my Championship title at the Red Bull 3style 2014.

I love creating DJ performances, and in the past few years, I made myself a name in the Drum and Bass scene.

How many followers do you have?

169K on Instagram and my goal this year is to reach 200K. Otherwise, 50K on YouTube, 99K on Facebook and 290K on TikTok.

What’s your favorite social media platform, and why?

What I use the most is Instagram. I post reels almost every day.
I also use YouTube a lot, I love seeing other DJ sets, and tutorials, and that's why I put a lot of content on YouTube too.

When did you start diving into social media as a DJ?

For me, social media was very important from the start.

Not many people know this but I was a graphic designer before being a DJ, always into media creation. I have a YouTube channel since it exists, and I always tested posting, doing livestreams, etc. On YouTube, you can see videos of young me in my very first flat 😂

How important is social media for your DJing activity?

To be a professional DJ nowadays, I think you have to play the social media game. Building a strong online presence and a fan base can help you to get gigs, as the club scene is going down, they book artists with a larger following now. That's why we see influencers taking DJ jobs even if they're not the best, they have a strong brand.

But, you don't have to be a people pleaser when posting. You can do “100% you”. The algorithms - sometimes we hate them - but they're also really good at showing the right people your stuff to help you find your audience.

What type of content works the best with your followers?

It works well to post footage from live shows unedited, with catchy headliners to engage the crowd, something to attract. Controversial hook lines work great, but you have to be careful and not overdo it because you can look arrogant. Don’t leave only the captions, explain your vision.

How do you create your content?

It helped a lot to have a videographer filming my whole set so I could choose extracts for top posts, and record the audio in Serato to have a good audio track.

After a gig, I take all the footage and synchronize audio and video in Final Cut Pro. Then I search for, something like 20 clips and save them for the coming weeks or even later. So I always have content ready whenever I need it. And if you can't afford a pro videographer, it can also be a friend with a phone, or yourself with a Go pro, but film yourself.

Also, you will notice that when you record yourself, you get better and better in time in DJing! 😉

I make around 20 clips and save them for the coming weeks or even later. So I always have content ready whenever I need it.

In your opinion, what are the common mistakes DJs make when trying to grow their presence on social media?

I’d say, two things.

The first and biggest is not posting anything. Especially when you get a good video, with good reactions, continue posting!

“It doesn’t have to be daily but at least two or three times a week.“

Don't be scared to put things out in the world even if you're not the best yet. And even if you're a beginner, there will be other DJs who are exactly at the same point in their career, and maybe they will enjoy your content and you'll grow together.

You don't know what can go viral!

And second, if people take time to comment on what you do: reply!

Something meaningful and start a little conversation. Not only it will keep your audience engaged, but it will also help you build a real relationship with them.

“Interact with your audience, involve them in your world, and build your circle.“

It's important to connect with other DJs, support each other and grow together.

Do you have any other advice for DJs who want to work on their online presence?

Don't focus on the haters, focus on those who love what you do, and it will start a virtuous loop.

The people who are following you and engaging with you are the people you should look out for.

I also post my signature routines over and over again. If I notice that one worked well, I play it at my next show, record it again, and post it. And I do tests, changing the captions or graphic details, and by multiplying it, I reach a wider audience.

ESKEI83 posting his signature routine “EVERYBODY LEAVEMEALONE” 4 times from different gigs.

And lastly, the main goal of using social media has to be to have more gigs. I think that's exactly how social media should be used.

“Be more visible, so promoters book you because you do cool stuff and can bring people into the clubs.”

Bonus trick: how to get user-generated content

I do this trick I had from my manager to get even more content from my show.

It’s a Dropbox feature where you can share a link with people so that they can upload files.

And after a gig or a festival, I ask in Instagram stories "If you filmed anything, please upload it". This is user-generated content and you have your set from different angles and perspectives, and with an authentic feeling as well, that’s a great way to connect with your audience!

---------------

And that’s a wrap! We hope y’all enjoyed these little tips from ESKEI83. Always engage with your audience, don’t shy away from sharing your signature routines in different shapes and forms, and always, always stay true to who you are!
